Fuelling Concussion Recovery: My Top Picks for Brain-Boosting Foods

Fuelling Concussion Recovery: My Top Picks for Brain-Boosting Foods

Hey there Fierce Fam!

As some of you may know, last week I had a bike accident which resulted in my first experience of concussion. One of the first pieces of advice I received was to eat clean, because giving the body anything which could cause inflammation would mean it's fighting that as apposed to putting all its efforts into healing.

As a clean eater by nature, I was all too happy to rise to this challenge and I began researching the best foods to fuel my body for success. Here is what I have found,

1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Brain's Superheroes

Picture this: tiny brain superheroes called omega-3 fatty acids swoop in to save the day! Found in walnuts, these essential fats reduce brain swelling and speed up recovery. I am fuelling up on avocado & yoghurt too! It's like a natural healer for your noggin!

2. Antioxidant-Rich Fruits and Veggies: Brain's Bodyguards

Our brains can use some bodyguards, right? Antioxidants in blueberries, strawberries, and veggies like spinach shield our brain cells from damage caused by oxidative stress.

3. Protein-Packed Foods: Brain's Builders

You know what they say: protein is the building block of life, and it applies to our brains too! Eggs and tempeh & tofu are the architects behind repairing damaged brain cells.

4. Hydration: Water to the Rescue

Time to hydrate, my friends! Water comes to the rescue, flushing out toxins and keeping our brains happy. After all, we wouldn't want our brain to feel like a desert, right? I am trying to drink 3+ litres a day right now to help the process.

5. Dark Chocolate - anything over 85% is awesome!

6. Things to avoid:

Processed and sugary foods, cut the carbs as much as possible too. Lots of my research supported a keto friendly diet during the early stages of concussion.

In a Nutshell

There you have it, folks! By munching on these brain-boosting foods, we're giving our noggins the TLC they deserve during concussion recovery. Remember, it's not just about rest and medical care, but also about nourishing our brains with delicious and nutritious choices. So, let's embrace these food superheroes and pave the way for a healthier, happier brain! Stay tasty and stay safe Fierce Fam.
