Eating disorders & managing mealtimes

Eating disorders & managing mealtimes

This blog comes with a disclaimer that I have never experienced an ED myself, however have some experience of friends who have struggled with ED's. This article was written with the intention of helping parents or people struggling with ED's to receive some compassionate support around how to deal with mealtimes ❤️

Eating disorders can be incredibly difficult to manage, especially when it comes to mealtimes. Mealtime can often be a source of anxiety

The first step to managing mealtimes is to create a meal plan. A meal plan can help you establish a routine and give you a sense of control. It is important to create a plan that is realistic and that fits your lifestyle and preferences. It is also important to make sure that the plan includes a variety of nutritious foods that will help you meet your nutrient needs.

It is also important to maintain a positive attitude towards mealtimes. This means not letting negative thoughts take over and reminding yourself that it is okay to eat. It can be helpful to focus on the pleasure of eating and the benefits of nutrition, rather than the fear of gaining weight.

It is also important to establish a supportive environment around mealtimes. This means creating a safe, non-judgmental space where you can eat without feeling guilty.

It is also helpful to be mindful of the people you are eating with. If you are having a meal with someone who is critical, remind them that they can be supportive without commenting on your food choices.

Finally, it is important to be patient with yourself. Eating disorders cant be cured overnight and it may take some time to fully recover. It is important to be gentle with yourself and to seek help if you need it.

Managing mealtimes while dealing with an eating disorder can be incredibly challenging. However, with the right support and strategies, it is possible to create a healthy relationship with food.
